How To Turn Bunk Beds Into A Loft Bed?
Posted on July 15th, 2009 in Bunk Bed Questions
So, when my sister and i got beds (when i was 3!) they were bunk beds, but you can take them apart, right? So, im 16 now, and my sister will be moveing out for college this summer.
As mean as it sounds, im takeing her bed and turning it into a loft, but i dont know how unsafe it could be. Any instructions online i could use?
thanks in advanced!

Probably pretty unsafe. You need to precisely drill at least a 1 1/4″ hole in both the top of each post, and the bottom of each leg, to receive a 6″ hardwood dowel that will be used to keep the beds together. This is extremely hard because usually the drilling will go off-center, or not deep enough, or not aligned with the receiving hole… At any rate, you’re looking at a very hard time. Go check out Big Lots! I saw bunk beds there, nice ones, for $199. Bonus–the girl on top won’t ever kill the one below!

It will not be safe. The top bunk bed requires the bottom bunk to be there for stability. If all you have are the bottom legs and no cross bracing, it will fall down. Take a look at http://www.collegebedlofts.com, they have a good variety of unfinished loft beds.
